Summer Spanish Program in the Andes

The Andes rise from the Pacific coast of South America, forming a land of spectacular geographical and cultural contrasts. The Andean countries of Ecuador and Peru are famous for their tropical coasts, beautiful beaches, the snow-capped mountain ranges and the lush Amazon rainforest.

The Summer Spanish Program in the Andes is based in Cuenca, Ecuador, a city of nearly 300,000 people. Nourished by four mountain rivers, Cuenca sits in a valley at 8400 feet above sea level and enjoys spring-like temperatures year round.

Cuenca was founded in 1557 near the site of the Inca city of Tomebamba and continues to preserve its Spanish colonial heritage. The many colonial churches and historic residences, the cobblestone streets and the nearby artisan villages—each with its own specialty—combine to make Cuenca one of the most charming cities in Ecuador.

In addition to formal, classroom study in Cuenca, the Summer Spanish Program includes several field trips. In Ecuador, students will travel to Quito and the Andean highlands, and they have the option of visiting the Ecuadorian rainforest. In Peru, visits include Cuzco, the oldest continually-inhabited city in the New World; the capital city of Lima; and Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas.

Augustana students began studying in Cuenca during the 1985 Fall Program in Latin America. Because of students' enthusiasm for the beauty of the city and the warmth of its people, Cuenca was chosen in 1989 as the site for the Summer Language Programs.
