Course Descriptions
The following courses are offered as part of the Augustana Summer Spanish Program in the Andes. Academic credit for these courses is granted by Augustana College.
- SN150 Basic Spanish (9)
- For students or other adults with little or no Spanish experience. Eight weeks of instruction introducing all aspects of Spanish grammar with concurrent practice in conversation. Equivalent to first-year college Spanish. (Augustana students: This course is equivalent to the SN101-102-103 sequence taught on-campus.)
- SN250 Intermediate Spanish (9)
- For students or other adults with one year of college Spanish, two or more years of high school Spanish, or equivalent. Eight weeks of intensive instruction including grammar review, composition, reading and discussion of literary texts and conversation practice. Equivalent to second-year college Spanish. (Augustana students: This course is equivalent to the SN201-202-203 sequence taught on-campus.)
- SN350 Advanced Spanish (9)
- For students or other adults with two years of college Spanish. Eight weeks of intensive study in composition, conversation, culture and civilization of Latin America. Includes the study of grammar, composition, idiomatic forms and pronunciation through the examination of selected literary, cultural and historic texts—pre-Columbian to present-day. (Augustana Spanish majors/minors: This course counts as SN301, SN326 or 327 and three elective credits.)
- SN451-458 Advanced Electives
- These courses are intended for students, teachers or other adults with three or more years of college Spanish. Each student will enroll in three courses from the following list:
- SN451 Women Writers (3)
- An examination of literature written by women, focusing on recurring themes and the place of women's writing in a male-dominated literary canon. (Augustana Spanish majors/minors: This course counts toward the literature requirement.) [Download syllabus]
- SN454 Latin American History: Conquest and Colonization (3)
- Using Ecuador and Peru as models, the course considers pre-Columbian civilizations, the conquest and clash of cultures and the development of the Spanish empire in the New World through independence. (Augustana Spanish majors/minors: This course counts as SN326.) [Download syllabus]
- SN457 Contemporary Latin American Society (3)
- An introduction and examination of contemporary Latin America through a combination of political and sociological perspectives. Topics include dualism in the social structure; underdevelopment: definitions, causes and cures; ideas of culture; and possible futures. (Augustana Spanish majors/minors: This course counts as an elective.) [Download syllabus]
- SN458 Indigenous Literature and Culture of the Andes (3)
- The oral tradition of literature and the culture of the indigenous people of the Andes. (Augustana Spanish majors/minors: This course counts toward the literature requirement.) [Download syllabus]
