The Institutions
Augustana College, founded in 1860, is a private liberal arts college with historical ties to the Swedish Lutheran Church and an international emphasis in its curriculum. Since 1970, Augustana has offered its students a wide range of foreign study opportunities throughout the world. South America became a focus of interest in 1976 with the establishment of the Latin American Fall Quarter, and Augustana students have been studying in the Andes since the summer of 1986. Augustana is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
The Centers for Interamerican Studies (CEDEI) is a not-for-profit institution of higher learning, dedicated to the study of American languages and cultures. CEDEI was founded in 1992, in recognition of the 500th anniversary of the encounter between the Old and New Worlds. To foster understanding among the people of the Americas, the Centers for Interamerican Studies sponsors a variety of academic activities independently and in conjunction with universities in North and South America. The main Cuenca Center is situated in the beautiful colonial heart of the city, just a few blocks from the main plaza, Parque Calderón. CEDEI is accredited by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ecuador.
